Taking Their Talents To The Big Screen

I don’t know about you, but I feel like there is a big award show every other week. The country music awards, the Grammys, the Met Gala…. and on and on. Last night was another one of those nights as actors, athletes, producers and everything in-between took to the red carpet for the Academy Awards. For those of you that don’t know, the Academy awards are awards given to the best of the best in the film industry that year. Now. I personally do not watch the show itself but I do enjoy seeing who won.

Over the years there have been many athletes to cross over into the film industry. At last year’s awards Kobe Bryant won the Academy Award for best Animated Short for his “Dear Basketball.” But sadly no big athlete has won an oscar for their acting ability. That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been some great performances. let’s take a look at some of the most well-known athletes turned actors.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Everyone knows him. Arnold is, of course, known for his insane physic and for winning the Mr. Olympia competition 7 times. He made his big screen debut in the 1977 film “Pumping Iron.” The film followed Arnold around during his preparation for the 1975 Mr. Universe and 1975 Mr. Olympia competitions. After that he had roles in a number of films but is now best known for his role in the Terminator.

LeBron James: As if being the best basketball player on the earth wasn’t hard enough… LeBron has been trying to break into the movie scene for a few years now. In 2015 he had a solid role in the film “Trainwreck” and seemed to be gaining some skill. More recently he had a large voice role in the animated film “Smallfoot” and it is reported that Space Jam 2 will go into production summer 2019.

Michael Jordan: Jumpman has to be the best “main sport” athlete to cross over onto the screen. Although I find myself on the LeBron James>MJ debate; I can’t argue that he was great in the original Space Jam. Not only was it his first time staring in a film…. 90% of his costars were animated making acting far more unnatural for Mike.
