Who wears short shorts? College basketball players!

With college basketball’s March Madness starting today it is only right to dive into the new/old style that is taking over the game. Short shorts are becoming far more popular in college basketball again.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Boston Celtics

Over the last few decades we have seen a few major swings in short length on the basketball court. Of course the game started with players wearing near boxer length shorts, as displayed above by WVUs own Jerry West.

But short length began to drop further down the leg very rapidly. Some accredit the very beginning of this trend to the great Michael Jordan and the young, Fab Five Michigan basketball team. There are a few different stories as to how Michael originally started the trend. One story is that Michael had a habit of grabbing at his shorts when he was playing defense or when he was bent over from exhaustion… because of this habit Michael went to Champion (they made the shorts) and asked that they drop the seam down lower so he could easily grab the bottom of his shorts.

Another rumor is that Michael wanted to wear his UNC shorts under his Chicago Bulls shorts. The problem was that the shorts were too short. What did he do? You guessed it… asked for bigger ones.  Put simply, Michael Jordan did it first and everyone wanted to be like Mike and wear baggy shorts.

This trend of baggy shorts is still the norm in the NBA, although the overall style length has shorted since the Iverson days and “The Dress Code” of 2005. Still today, if you watch any NBA game, on any night, most all of the shorts are roughly at the knee, give or take an inch up or down.

This is not the case in college basketball. Players such as Zion Williamson and Jordan Poole are starting to push back. Zion is undoubtable going to be the number pickI the draft this year and Poole a great career ahead of him as well. With social media trends catching fire so rapidly, I would bet that the short shorts are going to make a huge comeback in the NBA very soon.

Nets Stealing Biggie’s ‘Coogie’ Look?

Although the Brooklyn Nets sit in 7th place in the east and are making the playoffs finally; they could have a bit of trouble coming their way. Well, the Nets, NBA and Nike.

Clothing Brand “Coogi” is suing the Brooklyn Nets organization, Nike and the NBA for copywriter infringment over a new jersey the team debuted this year. The jersey is predominately black with, what they call, “Brooklyn Camo” on the collar and sleeve end. The problem with this is the design is pretty blatantly stolen from the clothing company, who is known for very interesting and eye confusing patterns.

While alive, Notorious BIG not only wore Coogi sweaters but rapped about the brand on many different occasions/records. The team does admit they purposely based the jersey design on Biggie… not a stretch considering he is/was and will be the king of Brooklyn.

Now, even if the design isn’t exact, there is some damning evidence against the 3. The lawsuit states that the defendants (NBA, Nets, Nike) purchased advertising on google for “Coogi Brooklyn nets” and “Brooklyn Coogi.” The clothing brand claims this is to direct people to Nike. The lawsuit was filed last Thursday, in a federal court in Manhattan.

But seeing tweets like this one over the past week… I’m left wondering if Nike didn’t actually do Coogi a favor. They’ll probably come to some settlement where Nike pays Coogi a lot of money (not to them) and Coogi just got an insane amount of publicity for the first time in who knows how long.

Coogi is a New York based company, Nike has a headquarters in New York , the NBA is based in New York, the Nets are in New York and of course Notorious BIG is as well. Although I doubt it…this could be quite the east coast show down.

Below is a map of some of Biggies favorites spots in Brooklyn along with the headquarters of those involved in the lawsuit.

UPDATE: Break Bank Bryce….?

Looks like our speculations were correct. Yesterday, Bryce Harper agreed to a 13-year, $330-Million-dollar contract with the Philadelphia Phillies…. 13 years is a big commitment to one organization, especially when your 26. BUT $330 million dollars is a whole lotta money.

Bryce on his way to Philly.

This deal is the largest contract in major North American sports history. The signing comes after a long, long free agency filled with many cities visits and reporters going crazy. We knew it would be a huge contract AND we knew he was holding out to see what Manny Machado was able to get. It, of course, is a good business decision to wait and see what the market has to offer but its also the most Bryce Harper move out there. Let’s not forget he’s been the golden boy of baseball since his early teens… a bit of a LeBron James of baseball (not even close though).

It only makes sense that he would expecttt the largest contract, it was really just a matter of when someone would cave. With Manny going for 10 years $300 million, Nolan Arenado going for 8 years $260 million and Bryce getting his 13 year $330 million… I think it’s safe to say that there is a new pay standard for stars in major league baseball.

Father Prime Strikes Back

Dwayne Wade is making his farewell tour this year. The Flash has had quite the career and is highly regarded as the 3rdbest shooting guard of all time. Sitting only behind MJ and Kobe… wow. For his career he averagesaround 22 points and 5 assists. But the stats don’t tell the full story. They don’t tell how he, somewhat, carried the Heat to a finals win very early in his career; or him teaching LeBron James how to win a championship. Dwayne Wade is, for lack of a better term, a sweetheart of the NBA. And watching him and the reactions he received last night, really showed that.

Last night Wade hit a dagger 3 pointer as time expired to beat the Golden State Warriors.

After catching the ball at the 3-point line, hesitating, having his shot blocked, catching it again and floating it up… he was able to bank it in off the glass. Of course him and his teammates ran wild and the arena was going nuts. But I think it was how the Golden State Warrior’s reacted that really got me thinking. After the initial shock, they were all smiling and congratulating Wade on the shot. It was the last time these guys would be on the floor at the same time as him and it was great to see.

“I told [Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry] I needed this one on my way out. So y’all get enough, you got enough. I think the one thing cool for me is to be able to do this when you’ve got younger teammates that heard about some of the things you do, but don’t always get an opportunity to see it. So it was cool to be able to do it in front of those guys as well.” -Dwayne Wade

Hilarious and accurate. I bet everyone watching this game wanted that shot to do in. And I mean everyone… even Warriors fans! But lets not forget he’s rounding third now. High fiving the 3rd base coach and soon, riding off into the sunset.

Yes, it was a regular season game. Yes, Miami isn’t winning a championship. and YES it was lucky. But it was special. They are his best friend’s arch enemies (kind of, who knows in the NBA anymore), he was in Miami, he pumped KD out of his shoes….. it was special. It was the first time D-Wade has hit a shot like this since 2009 and it couldn’t have been more special…. during the regular season**

Break Bank Bryce….?

With Manny Machado just signing a 10 year $300 million dollar deal with the San Diego Padres, all eyes have shifted to Bryce Harper. This years free agency has been orbiting around these two since the beginning.

The 26-year-old, right fielder has been really testing the trading market to see how much money he can squeeze out of someone. But it is expected that he will signed a deal somewhere in the same range as Machado. This comes as no surprise considering they are the same age and both insane talents.

Harper has been in the baseball spotlight since he was 16 years old when the E:60 profile “The Natural”was filmed. But he is a bit of natural in another field as well… fashion. Since entering the league (not so much in high school) Bryce shown he cares about how he dresses. Signing a blockbuster deal will certainly help him bring this style to another level… Let’s take a look at some of his best looks over the years as we wait for his decision.

Serena Aces The Oscars

Sticking with our Oscars and athletes and film theme… Serena Williams is probably our biggest story from the night. If you are unaware Serena was, somewhat, recently involved in a bit of situation, check the link for full details. But long story short; during one of her matches she protested an officials ruling that she was being coached and a cartoonist depicted it that she threw a tantrum and was being dramatic.

Serena is now trying to dismiss this common description of female athletes. She was very out spoken that she feels her situationwould not have been the same if she were a man.  During this year’s Academy Awards Serena teamed up with Nike to debut the “Dream Crazier” advertisement. It is a follow up ad to a advertisement titled “Dream Crazy.” This first ad featured Colin Kaepernick:

“Dream Crazier” hopes to combat the common misconception that if a female athlete complains she is being dramatic and to empower female athletes. Female athletes face a number of different perceptions and obstacles, such as unequal pay, that male athletes do not. Nike hopes to shine a light on these issues and drive women of all ages to strive fro greatness. In order to show a sign of unity amongst these women the ad will feature athletes form the women’s soccer team, an olympic gymnast and an olympic fencer. Very different sports, one goal.

“So if they want to call you crazy, fine. Show them what crazy can do.”

Taking Their Talents To The Big Screen

I don’t know about you, but I feel like there is a big award show every other week. The country music awards, the Grammys, the Met Gala…. and on and on. Last night was another one of those nights as actors, athletes, producers and everything in-between took to the red carpet for the Academy Awards. For those of you that don’t know, the Academy awards are awards given to the best of the best in the film industry that year. Now. I personally do not watch the show itself but I do enjoy seeing who won.

Over the years there have been many athletes to cross over into the film industry. At last year’s awards Kobe Bryant won the Academy Award for best Animated Short for his “Dear Basketball.” But sadly no big athlete has won an oscar for their acting ability. That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been some great performances. let’s take a look at some of the most well-known athletes turned actors.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Everyone knows him. Arnold is, of course, known for his insane physic and for winning the Mr. Olympia competition 7 times. He made his big screen debut in the 1977 film “Pumping Iron.” The film followed Arnold around during his preparation for the 1975 Mr. Universe and 1975 Mr. Olympia competitions. After that he had roles in a number of films but is now best known for his role in the Terminator.

LeBron James: As if being the best basketball player on the earth wasn’t hard enough… LeBron has been trying to break into the movie scene for a few years now. In 2015 he had a solid role in the film “Trainwreck” and seemed to be gaining some skill. More recently he had a large voice role in the animated film “Smallfoot” and it is reported that Space Jam 2 will go into production summer 2019.

Michael Jordan: Jumpman has to be the best “main sport” athlete to cross over onto the screen. Although I find myself on the LeBron James>MJ debate; I can’t argue that he was great in the original Space Jam. Not only was it his first time staring in a film…. 90% of his costars were animated making acting far more unnatural for Mike.

Famous Fashion: Nature vs. Nurture

Most people, myself included, predominantly pay attention to our own demographic. We seek out the latest news on fashion we like, see constant posts about what celebrities/athletes we like are wearing, what the latest trends are… etc. Of course we all do this; we are naturally drawn to what is applicable to ourselves.

But there is a crazy trend happening… children’s fashion. There is nothing that can make a person feel as selfless as having a child… or cute puppy. And it’s no secret that some parents have been dressing up their children in trendy outfits for some time now.

But, over the past few years it feels that this is more highlighted throughout social media. Famous peoples children are everywhere. Creepy. But this could simply be because of the overall ramped up intake of content or a combination of multiple things.

This past weekend highlighted this trend and, I think, helped figure out why this has become so popular. As we know the NBA held All Star weekend; which meant its Rookie USA All-Star Fashion Show took place. This event is a chance for various celebrities, and their children to hit the runway. Some of the names (and their children) in this year’s event were Diddy, Carl Banks, Fabulous and, of course, Russel Westbrook Feat. son Noah!

Westbrook’s and Noah, let their shoes do most of the talking. They both matched their pants and shirt/top, and sported very brightly colored sneakers. But just like his dad, this is nothing new for Noah. He consistently puts most of us to shame with his style.

It seems that recently, probably since his walking ability has got substantially better, Noah has been all over social media. He is usually playing on the court with his father before the games, dressed great, or with him before or after a game.

But Noah isn’t the only athletes kid to have major style, there really are a lot. But this is to no surprise. It seems that every time a player or celeb is going to an event, to dinner, coffee… a game, they are dressed to look good. This ultimately rubs off on how they dress their children and ultimately how they dress themselves. So, in conclusion it seems fairly simple to me. Trendy parent=trendy child.

All Star Catwalk

As the NBA season hits its mid-way point and the playoff picture becomes more clear, players are getting ready to unwind and enjoy this year’s All Star break. There is guaranteed to be some eye popping style choices and there have been many memorable moments/wardrobes throughout the years…. Let’s take a look back on some of the highlights.

Odell Beckham Jr:

Odell is commonly known for his incredible one handed catches, blonde hair and his fashion. He is regularly seen out and about in the most up to date outfit you can find. He has a history of favoring companies such as Supreme, Louis Vuitton and Nike. His fit for last years All Star game hit all of those check boxes. At the time of the All Star game last year; Supreme and Louis Vuitton had just recently done a collaboration on a variety of luggage items. In mega star fashion Odell had the satchel piece matched up perfectly with a pair of Nike AF1’s.

Nick Cannon:

The All Star break is far more than an opportunity for players to relax and engage in the festivities. It’s an opportunity for all of Hollywood to show off what they can bring to the court during the celebrity game… Some of which it is much more than athleticism. Nick Cannon showed up to the event last year HOLDING a pair of gold, snakeskin Jordan’s that im assuming he hopes will make him “like mike.” Cannon has participated in the event a few times and hopes that this year’s new 4-point shot will help raise money for a good cause.

JB Smoove and Shaq:

Although JB Smoove isn’t an athlete himself but is known by many people for his stand-up comedy, acting and writing. He has appeared in many films and TV shows over the years and is a regular in the sports and fashion world.

NBA All Star Weekend

Let’s all remember the All Star game takes place in Los Angeles. The land of bathing suits, flip flogs, tank tops and… sunscreen. A night out in LA looks more along the lines of a lifestyle fashion show. But, do we see something odd about this picture? Anything a bit out of place maybe? JB looks like a cowboy! His choice of fit to watch the events was a unique one and one that caused others to become a bit hands on. JB is rocking a far look in comparison to those around him… especially Shaquille O’Neal… who happens to be shining those beautiful cowboy boots and getting quite a kick out of it.

Remember Me As I Was: Derrick Rose

It is pretty incredible to look at the career of Derrick rose…. Where he started, where we thought he was going to be and where he is now.

He was phenomenal at the University of Memphis, Drafted number 1 overall and at the age of 22 became theyoungest player in NBA historyto win the MVP award. He also became the second Chicago Bull to win the award, putting him with the likes of Michael Jordan. Since Jordan’s departure from the franchise the bulls weren’t winning the way they were accustomed to in the ‘90s and Derrick Rose was thought to be the answer.

2011/2012 Season:

But things in Chicago took a turn for the worst. During the 2011/2012 season, a season in which the Bulls had to fight through Lebron and the Heat again, Rose tore his right ACL. With just over a minute left to go, in a game they were winning; Derrick Rose went down.  This injury would knock him and the Bulls out of the playoffs and cause him to miss the entire next season (2012/2013).

2012/2013 Season: Out due to ACL

2013/2014 Season:

The anticipation for his return was unlike many imaginable. Bulls fans were very excited to see him on the floor again and expectations were fairly high. He was young, talented and…. Rested? With his return, came some up and down results. Things weren’t exactly going as planned. All year long both Rose and the Bulls seemed out of rhythm and unable to catch a groove. This all came to a head when he went down with another knee injury. This time the right meniscus and, again, another missed season.

2014/2015 Season:

At this point it would be tough to say whether Chicago fans were excited, or nervous for Derrick Roses return. He was still very young and still seemed to have some spring. The idea that he could be an MVP again wasn’t exactly anyone’s hopes but it could have been sitting in the back of people’s heads. The way back… maybe, but it was there. Rose was considered to be playing well, consistent minutes, shooting moderately well and overall contributing to the team. Then, on February 24ththe unthinkable happened; he tore his right meniscus again. This time it seemed to be over. He had to have another surgery and it appeared as if Chicago was sick of him.

Derrick Rose has been one of the most “what if” careers in basketball. Some say he would have been a perineal All Star, some say the greatest point guard of all time. These are all questions that cannot be answered but after his most recent (rumored) ankle injury we really need to remember who he can be. Who he can be is the youngest MVP in league history, mentioned in the same breath as Michael and remembered for coming back from 4 knee injuries. To solidify this image of himself, on October 31st2018 Derrick Rose scored a career high 51 points. This was huge for Rose; who received MVP chants from the fans and couldn’t help but shed a meaningful tear after the game.
